How do you prepare a trainee, to perform surgery on their own after training? There is so much more than just learning the operative steps, which are complex no doubt. It was my pleasure to be part of the national fellows TCAR course, where I joined esteemed faculty to help train 50 graduating vascular surgeons from across the country on how to successfully perform this new technique, which I believe will revolutionize the way we treat carotid disease. For the most part they were fairly well-versed in the surgical technique, they understood the difference of when to and more importantly when not to operate, showing wisdom and great clinical expertise. Where they fall short unfortunately is how to start a practice, build a team, develop a program, and a business in medicine. As I tried to educate them with my good and bad experiences, I realized we have a lot of work to do. I'd like to do a shout out to Silk Road Medical, Inc. medical affairs folks lead by Tammy Leitsinger who recognized this need and added this part of their education this year. I congratulate the graduating fellows on completion of the final training and wish them all the best, and I sincerely hope the few nuggets I shared with them will be useful for them in the future.
